In the context of the ongoing debate concerning the options to move beyond the 20% emission reduction target, Cerame-Unie calls on EU policy makers to ensure the predictable regulatory framework which is necessary to promote low carbon investments. This debate, which is crucial for the future competiveness of the EU ceramic industry, should carefully address the principles of technical feasibility and economic cost efficiency when considering unilateral top-down targets. The EU ceramic industry is already committed to ambitious emission reductions through stringent benchmarks. Considering also the absence of an international agreement and the uncertainty related to the cost-benefit analysis of the 30% target, Cerame-Unie is of the opinion that further unilateral action is not appropriate at this stage from both an economic and environmental view point, as it risks leading to job and carbon leakage.
