This sector has been most active in creating industry groups with a European dimension, taking advantage of the EU single market. As production standards still differ across Europe, production plants are being maintained in the different member states in order to serve the local markets.

The industry closely follows developments in the building, and more especially the renovation market, and has to face increasing competition from cheap labour countries in Asia.

New casting techniques, and the increasing use of robots have rapidly changed the production process in this relatively labour-intensive sector.
