WALL/FLOORTILES

This sector of the ceramics industry continues to be highly competitive internationally, with strong production concentrations in the Sassuolo (Italy) and Castellon (Spain) areas, and sizeable activities in Portugal, Germany and France.

The southern European countries are, together with Germany, the most important markets for both wall- and floor tiles. Tiles are used in building and construction; the maintenance and renovation market is of great importance. New applications are the use of tiles for facades of offices, swimming pools, public areas, etc.

About a quarter of the EU production is exported to third countries; imports remain at a much lower level.

A lively interaction between producers, machinery and raw materials suppliers, designers and scientists continues to put the industry at the forefront worldwide. The approval of the harmonized product standard has meant an important step towards the completion of the single market for ceramic tiles, as the industry is now able to use CE marking on its products.
